Selling price with profit included:

If buying price is [latex]B[latex] and you want to make [latex]P[latex]% profit, then selling price [latex]S[latex] would be:
[latex]S=B+(P[latex]% of [latex]B)=B+BP/100=B(100+P/100)[latex]

For loss, the “plus sign” will be replaced with “minus sign”.

Please note: If you increase a value by [latex]x[latex]%, then if you decrease it by [latex]x[latex]%, then you will NOT get the original value.

Here is a real-life example
=> After increasing by [latex]25[latex]%, you need to decrease it by [latex]20[latex]%, to return to original value.
=> After decreasing by [latex]20[latex]%, you need to increase it by [latex]25[latex]%, to return to original value.

Successive Percents

One of the  tricks involves successive percents.

If a ticket increased in price by [latex]20[latex]%, and then increased again by [latex]5[latex]%, by what percent did the ticket price increase in total?

The overall change will be
[latex]\frac { 100\{ x+(-x)\} +(-x) }{ 100 }[latex] %
=[latex]\frac { 100\{ x-x)\} +x(-x) }{ 100 }[latex] %
=[latex]\frac { { x }^{ 2 } }{ 100 }[latex] %

Percent change after [latex]n[latex] cycles of raise of [latex]x[latex]% =[latex]\frac { ({ 100+x })^{ n }-{ 100 }^{ n } }{ { 100 }^{ n-1 } }[latex] %

=[latex]\frac { ({ 100+10 })^{ 2 }-{ 100 }^{ 2 } }{ { 100 }^{ 2-1 } }[latex] %
=[latex]\frac { { 100 }^{ 2 }+2*100*10+{ 10 }^{ 2 }-{ 100 }^{ 2 } }{ 100 }[latex] %
=[latex]\frac { 2*100*10*100 }{ { 100 } }[latex] %
=[latex]\frac { 100(2*100+1) }{ { 100 } }[latex] %
=[latex]21[latex]%

Smart Numbers: Pick [latex]100[latex]

More often than not, percent problems include unspecified numerical amounts; often these unspecified amounts are described by variables.

A shirt that initially cost [latex]d[latex] dollars was on sale for [latex]20[latex]% off. If s represents the sale price of the shirt, [latex]d[latex] is what percentage of [latex]s[latex]?

This is an easy problem that might look confusing. To solve percent problems such as this one, simply pick 100 for the unspecified amount.

If the shirt initially cost $[latex]100[latex], then [latex]d=100[latex]. If the shirt was on sale for [latex]20[latex]% off, then the new price of the shirt is $[latex]80[latex]. Thus, [latex]s=80[latex].

The question asks: d is what percentage of [latex]s[latex], or [latex]100[latex] is what percentage of [latex]80[latex]? In order to solve this question, we need to use this formula.

UntitledPut is = [latex]100[latex]; of = [latex]80[latex]; and you will get the value of [latex]p[latex].

Therefore, [latex]d[latex] is [latex]125[latex]% of [latex]s[latex].

Interest Formulas

Certain percent problems require a working knowledge of basic interest formulas. The compound interest formula may look complicated, but it just expresses the idea of “successive percents” for a number of periods.Untitled
