UntitledSome other examples of decimals include:

Decimals less than [latex]-1[latex]:                         [latex]-3.65,-12.01,-145.9[latex]
Decimals between [latex]-1[latex] and [latex]0[latex]:       [latex]-0.65,-0.8912,-0.076[latex]
Decimals between [latex]0[latex] and [latex]1[latex]:        [latex]0.65,0.8912, 0.076[latex]
Decimals greater than [latex]1[latex]:                       [latex]3.65, 12.01, 145.9[latex]

Note that an integer can be expressed as a decimal by adding the decimal point and the digit [latex]O[latex]. For example:

[latex]8=8.0[latex]         [latex]-123=-123.0[latex]         [latex]400=400.0[latex]
DIGITS

You may need to write a number as sum of some other numbers or fractions, which are quite common in various exams.

For instance, [latex]243[latex] can be written as:

[latex]2*100=200[latex]
[latex]4*10=40[latex]
[latex]3*1=3[latex]
_______________
Sum = [latex]200+40+3=243[latex]
—–

Let us analyze the end by the preceding number: [latex]0.8347[latex]!

[latex]8[latex] is in the tenths place, giving it a value of [latex]8[latex] tenths, or [latex]8/10[latex]
[latex]3[latex] is in the hundredths place, giving it a value of [latex]3[latex] hundredths, or [latex]3/100[latex]
[latex]4[latex] is in the thousandths place, giving it a value of [latex]4[latex] thousandths, or [latex]4/1000[latex]
[latex]7[latex] is in the ten thousandths place, giving it a value of [latex]7[latex] ten thousandths, or [latex]7/10,000[latex]

Using Place Value

[latex]A[latex] and [latex]B[latex] are both two-digit numbers, with [latex]A>B[latex]. If [latex]A[latex] and [latex]B[latex] contain the same digits, but in reverse order, what integer must be a factor of [latex](A-B)[latex]?
(A) 4
(B) 5
(C) 6
(D) 8
(E) 9

যদি কোন সংখ্যার ones, tens and hundreds ডিজিট যথাক্রমে [latex]x, y[latex] and [latex]z[latex] হয়, তাহলে সংখ্যাটি হবে  = [latex]100z+10y+x[latex]

[latex](10x+y)-(10y+x)[latex]
= [latex]9x-9y[latex]
= [latex]9(x-y)[latex]

Unit’s digit = [latex]x[latex]
Tens digit = [latex]y[latex]
Hundreds digit = [latex]z[latex]
So, the number is = [latex]100z+10y+x[latex]
The flipped number will be = [latex]100x+10y+z[latex]
The  difference will be ([latex]100z+10y+x)-(100x+10y+z[latex])
= [latex]99z-99x[latex]
=[latex]99(z-x)[latex]

Rounding to the Nearest Place Value

Rounding up করতে [latex]4.7[latex] কে [latex]5.0[latex] লিখতে হয়; আর [latex]7.1[latex] কে শুধু [latex]7.0[latex] লিখতে হয়।

If [latex]x[latex] is the decimal [latex]8.1d5[latex], with [latex]d[latex] as an unknown digit, and [latex]x[latex] rounded to the nearest tenth is equal to [latex]8.1[latex], which digits could not be the value of [latex]d[latex]?

In order for [latex]x[latex] to be [latex]8.1[latex] when rounded to the nearest tenth, the right-digit-neighbor, [latex]d[latex], must be less than [latex]5[latex]. Therefore [latex]d[latex] cannot be [latex]5,6,7,8[latex] or [latex]9[latex].

Adding Zeroes to Decimals

Adding zeroes to the end of a decimal or taking zeroes away from the end of a decimal does not change the value of the decimal. For example: [latex]3.6=3.60=3.6000[latex].

Be careful, however, not to add or remove any zeroes from within a number. Doing so will change the value of the number:  [latex]7.017.1[latex]

Powers of [latex]10[latex]: shifting the Decimal

Place values continually decrease from left to right by powers of [latex]10[latex]. Understanding this can help you understand the following shortcuts for multiplication and division.

When you multiply any number by a positive power of ten, move the decimal forward (right) the specified number of places. This makes positive numbers larger:

Untitled[latex]3.9742*{ 10 }^{ 3 }=3974[latex]      (Move the decimal forward [latex]3[latex] spaces.)
[latex]89.507*10=895.07[latex]    (Move the decimal forward [latex]1[latex] space.)

When you divide any number by a positive power of ten, move the decimal backward (left) the specified number of places. This makes positive numbers smaller:
[latex]4169.2/{ 10 }^{ 2 }=41.692[latex]                 (Move the decimal forward [latex]2[latex] space.)
[latex]89.507/10=8.9507[latex]                (Move the decimal backward [latex]1[latex] space.)

Note that if you need to add zeroes in order to shift a decimal, you should do so:
[latex]2.57*{ 10 }^{ 6 }=2570000[latex]                  (Add [latex]4[latex] zeroes at the end.)
[latex]14.29 /{ 10 }^{ 5 }=0.0001429[latex]           (Add [latex]3[latex] zeroes at the beginning.)

Finally, note that negative powers of ten reverse the regular process:
[latex]6782.01*{ 10 }^{ -3 }=6.78201[latex]

You can think about these processes as trading decimal places for powers of ten.
For instance, all of the following numbers equal [latex]110,700[latex].

UntitledThe first number gets smaller by a factor of [latex]10[latex] as we move the decimal one place to the left, but the second number gets bigger by a factor of [latex]10[latex] to compensate.

Addition And Subtraction

To add or subtract decimals, make sure to line up the decimal points. Then add zeroes to make the right sides of the decimals the same length.

Untitled

Multiplication

To multiply decimals, ignore the decimal point until the end. Just multiply the numbers as you would if they were whole numbers. Then count the total number of digits to the right of the decimal point in the factors. The product should have the same number of digits to the right of the decimal point.

UntitledThere are 3 digits to the right of the decimal point in the factors ([latex]0[latex] and [latex]2[latex] in the first factor and [latex]4[latex] in the second factor). Therefore, move the decimal point [latex]3[latex] places to the left in the product: [latex]28[latex]=>[latex]0.028[latex].
If the product ends with [latex]0[latex], count it in this process: [latex]0.8*0.5=0.40[latex], since [latex]8*5=40[latex].

If you are multiplying a very large number and a very small number, the following trick works to simplify the calculation: move the decimals in the opposite direction the same number of places.

[latex]0.0003*40,0001=[latex]?

Move the decimal point RIGHT four places on the [latex]0.0003[latex]=>[latex]3[latex]
Move the decimal point LEFT four places on the [latex]40000[latex]=>[latex]4[latex]
[latex]0.0003*40,000=3*4=12[latex]

Positives & Negatives

Numbers can be either positive or negative (except the number [latex]0[latex], which is neither).
Positive: [latex]1,2,3[latex]…..
Negative: [latex]-1,-2,-3[latex]…

Absolute Value: Absolutely Positive

|[latex]5[latex]|=[latex]5[latex]
|[latex]-5[latex]|=[latex]5[latex]

Absolute value

UntitledOn the number line above, note that [latex]3[latex] and [latex]-3[latex] are the same distance from [latex]0[latex], which is located halfway between them. In general, if two numbers are opposites of each other, then they have the same absolute value, and [latex]0[latex] is halfway between. If [latex]x=-y[latex], then we have either (নীচের ছবি দুইটির যে কোন একটি) of these:

Untitled

Odds & Evens  (জোড় ও বেজোড়)

Even numbers are integers that are divisible by [latex]2[latex].
Odd numbers are integers that are not divisible by [latex]2[latex].
All integers are either even or odd.
Consecutive integers alternate between even and odd:      [latex]9,10,11,12,13[latex] .
Negative integers are also either even or odd:
Evens: [latex]-2,-4,-6,-8,-10,-12[latex]… Odds: [latex]-1,-3,-5,-7,-9,-11[latex]…

Addition, Subtraction and Multiplication

UntitledTo summarize so far:
Odd\pm Even=ODD
Odd\pm Odd=ODD
Even\pm Even=EVEN
Odd*Odd=ODD
Even*Even=EVEN
Odd*Even =EVEN

  • ৩০০টি জোড় সংখ্যার মধ্যে কিছুর আগে plus ও বাকীদের আগে minus চিহ্ন আছে (means, some are in addition, some are in subtraction), সামগ্রিক যোগফল কিন্তু জোড় হবে।

If there are ODD  number of terms, then…

Untitled[latex]15[latex] even numbers are summed to make an even number. But [latex]49[latex] odds are summed to yield an odd number. Here “summed” means plus & minus may be in a mixed fashion.

[latex]40[latex] of a set of [latex]99[latex] numbers are odd, and the remaining are even. If [latex]30[latex]% of the total numbers are negative, then will the sum of all of these [latex]99[latex] numbers be positive?

Division

UntitledNote: An odd number divided by any other integer CANNOT produce an even integer. Also, an odd number divided by an even number CANNOT produce an integer, because the odd number will never be divisible by the factor of [latex]2[latex] concealed within the even number.

Testing Odd & Even Cases

If [latex]a,b[latex], and [latex]c[latex] are integers and [latex]ab+c[latex] is odd, which of the following must be true? [latex]a+c[latex] is odd [latex]b+c[latex] is odd [latex]abc[latex] is even
(A) I only
(B) II only
(C) III only
(D) I and III only
(E) II and III only

Here, [latex]a,b[latex] and [latex]c[latex] could all possibly be odd or even. Some combinations of Odds & Evens for [latex]a,b[latex] and [latex]c[latex] will lead to an odd result. Other combinations will lead to an even result. We need to test each possible combination to see what the result will be for each. Set up a table, as on the next page, and fill in the possibilities.

UntitledScenarios [latex]2,3,5[latex] and [latex]7[latex] yield an odd result, and so we must focus only on those scenarios. We can conclude that Statement I is false (Scenario [latex]3[latex] yields [latex]a+c=[latex]EVEN), Statement II is false (Scenario [latex]5[latex] yields [latex]b+c=[latex]EVEN), and Statement III is true (all [latex]4[latex] working scenarios yield [latex]abc=[latex]EVEN). Therefore, the correct answer is (C).
